HISTORY

The Institute of Environmental Sciences of Bogaziçi UniversityThe Institute of Environmental Sciences was founded in 1982 as an extension and restructuring of the Environmental Research Group established in the School of Engineering during the late 1970s. Starting with three graduate students in the fall semester of the 1984/1985 academic year, the Institute had its first graduates in 1986, and since then 208 M.Sc. and 46 Ph.D degrees were awarded in the fields of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Technology. The Institute of Environmental Sciences of Bogaziçi University is the first environmental research organization in Turkey established by law (Turkish Official Gazette, No: 18124, 3 August 1983). The Institute academic staff consists of 16 full time faculty members, 18 research assistants and 5 expert technical personnel.

Unlike environmental engineering departments in many other Turkish universities, the Institute of Environmental Sciences plays a unique role, comprising researchers from a broad background, i.e. not only from environmental engineering, but also from chemical, civil, and industrial engineering, chemistry, biophysics and biology. The research topics of the Institute are not only on environmental engineering (like all other environmental engineering departments) but also on pure environmental sciences, ecology, and social environmental sciences. Since 1994, more than 320 research articles have been published by the Institute members in journals covered by Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index. These articles have received 3500 citations (end of 2009). Institute h-index is 31.

EDUCATION

The Institute of Environmental Sciences offers M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees.

In the M.S. programs the following degrees are given:

  1. Students with engineering background receive M.S. in Environmental Technology upon completion of the M.S. program in Environmental Technology.

  2. Students with engineering or pure sciences or social sciences background receive M.S. in Environmental Sciences-Pure Science (Yüksek Lisans) or M.S. in  Environmental Social Sciences (Yüksek Lisans) upon completion of the appropriate M.S. program in Environmental Sciences.

  3. Students with pure sciences background receive M.S. in Environmental Technology (Yüksek Lisans) upon completion of the M.S. program in Environmental Technology.

Students with a degree from any branch of Engineering, Pure Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics Political and Administrative Sciences may apply for the M.S. programs. The M.S. programs require at least 27 credit hours of course work and a written thesis. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Computer, Engineering graduates applying to the Environmental Technology program may have to take remedial courses before they start the formal courses of the program. Environmental and Chemical Engineering graduates are not required to take remedial courses for the Environmental Technology program. There are no remedial courses for the Environmental Sciences program. The duration of the M.S. programs is normally 2 years.

FACILITIES

The Institute has several environmental analysis and research laboratories. In the Environmental Quality Laboratory, water, wastewater and soil samples are analysed for environmental quality parameters. The Air Quality Laboratory is mobile and measurements are made on-site. Stack gas sampling and measurements, ambient air quality measurements, noise and environmental quality of the indoor environment can be made by visits to industries.
