CENN - Caucasus Environmental NGO Network

CENN - Caucasus Environmental NGO Network - is a non-governmental, regional organization established in 1998 and specialized in the fields of civil society development and institutional strengthening, environmental research and policy, resources management, compliance management and communication and environment.

Since its establishment, CENN has worked at the local, national and regional levels in the Caucasus region. CENN believes in networking and cooperation in the context of environmental issues. We have already a serious record of joint activities and projects implemented regionally, where all three South Caucasus countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia - participated equally to find the solutions to local and regional environmental problems.

With 5 offices throughout the South Caucasus region and 30 full time staff members, CENN has the capability, experience and commitment to providing a service that is consistent, professional and of the highest quality. CENN has around 10 years experience in delivering modern solutions for public and business sectors as well as communities, assisting them in managing their environmental and related risks and helping them to achieve competitive advantage through improved environmental and social performance

 

CENN HISTORY

2010

CENN was elected as Co-Coordinator of the Thematic Working Group on Energy Security, Environment and Climate Change of the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaPCSF)

CENN became a member of the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaPCSF)

CENN established Association of the Tower Owners of Svaneti

2009

CENN became a member of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaPCSF)

CENN initiated Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Mitigation (CCADM) program in the Caucasus

CENN developed natural disaster hazard, vulnerability and risk maps for the hotspot areas in Georgia

CENN initiated a new program promoting modern DRM (Disaster Risk Management) technologies and methodologies in partnership with the ITC Netherlands

CENN created sensitivity reports and maps for Khrami-Debeda (Georgia-Armenia) and Alazani Iori (Georgia-Azerbaijan) transboundry watersheds

CENN became a member of the GEF NGO Network

CENN became a member of the Working Group on Environmental Impact Assessment, under the UNECE ESPOO Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in Transboundry Context

CENN became a member of the Avalon Network

2008

CENN established:

  • Open Environmental Civic Initiative (OECI) for the sustainable Development of Georgia that incorporates local groups active throughout the country and works on integrated natural resources management and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) issues.
  • Rural Women Councils (RWCs) in Khrami-Dedeba (Georgia-Armenia) and Alazani-Iori (Georgia Azerbaijan) transboundry watersheds that work on women's empowerment for sustainable natural resources management
  • Compliance Stewardship Council (CSC) for improved policy dialogue and sustainable development

CENN, together with the OECI, managed to set out DRR (improvement of the system of environmental monitoring and prognosis) as one of the three priorities in the Basic Data and Direction (BDD) document of the Government of Georgia for 2009-2012

CENN initiated the following Green Campaigns:

  • Green Office
  • Green School
  • Green Bag
  • Green Cafe

CENN obtained a CSO observer status for the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification)

CENN became an NGO Focal Point SAICM - Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management

CENN became a Partner of the PCFV - Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles

2007

CENN established:

  • Center for Journalists reporting on environment
  • Bakuriani Hotel Association

CENN signed Memorandum of Partnership with organizations acting in the fields of sustainable development and environment in the South Caucasus countries

2006

CENN established

  • Bakuriani Tourist Information Center (TIC)
  • Samtskhe-Javakheti Public Information Center (PIC)
  • Qvemo Kartli Public Information Center (PIC)
  • Ajarian Youth Environmental Network (AYEN)

CENN organized the first Caucasus Independent Documentary Film Festival “Footprints”
CENN facilitates Kura-Araks NGO Forum
CENN merged with the ACTA Consultants Georgia Ltd.

2005

CENN established:

  • Caucasus Youth Environmental Network (CYEN)
  • Public EIA Library

2004

CENN established

  • Energy Services Consumers Association (ESCA) in Tbilisi, Georgia
  • Bakuriani Public Environmental Information Center (PEIC)

2003

First regional magazine “Caucasus Environment” issued
CENN established Bolnisi Public Environmental Information Center (PEIC)

2002

CENN started large scale regional activities in the Caucasus region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russian Federation)

2000

CENN was officially registered in Georgia

1998

CENN created Caucasus electronic network
CENN started operation, Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Caucasus environmental NGOs
